RF-Shielded Server Rack for Military-Grade Defense against EMI Attacks

Posted by Enconnex Team on December 16, 2020

It sounds like something straight out of a spy novel, but it’s all too real. Cybercriminals can pick up radio frequency (RF) emissions from computer equipment and gain access to sensitive data. That’s why organizations with high-security applications must protect their IT equipment from eavesdropping.

The United States government deploys shielded rooms called Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs) to address this issue. However, most organizations do not have access to this kind of data center, and building one out can cost upwards of $1,200 per square foot depending on the size and specifications.

The DefenseShield Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Hardened Enclosure provides a cost-effective alternative to SCIFs. It is a 42U (customizable) standard-footprint cabinet constructed from aerospace-grade aluminum with copper-nickel gaskets shielding all seams and penetrations of the cabinet. It limits RF signal leakage and dissipates any outside electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Meets the Strictest Security and Regulatory Requirements

Electronics transmit RF signals and spurious emissions from system operations. Eavesdroppers can analyze these signals to reproduce screens, record keystrokes, and capture data before it’s encrypted. Changes in system power can also allow eavesdroppers to discern cryptographic methodology and, in some cases, the keys necessary to decrypt information. Because these types of attacks circumvent physical and logical cybersecurity controls, the only defense is to prevent interception of the RF signals.

The DefenseShield RF-shielded cabinet is the highest-performing, highest-quality, and best-value shielding product on the market today. Designed for defense and high-security applications, it provides military-grade performance to shield against technical surveillance. It works like a maximum-security vault that protects your data at the server rack level.

DefenseShield is ideal for environments in which sensitive data must be isolated to meet the strictest security and regulatory requirements. It can be deployed at a lower total cost than a shielded room while providing more granular signal and physical security.

Enables Highly Scalable Real Device Testing

In addition to the DefenseShield RF shielded cabinet, we also offer DevShield, purpose-built for real device testing at scale. Similar in form and providing the same level of shielding as DefenseShield, DevShield can be used to create an environment for real device testing. Because many devices lack wired network connectivity, using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, and other wireless communication technologies, real device testing requires segregation of the equipment.

DevShield allows dense installation of up to 400 wireless devices while eliminating interference. This allows for the testing of applications, websites, and cybersecurity threats across multiple hardware platforms and operating systems. DevShield is almost infinitely scalable from a single enclosure in an R&D lab to a data center with as many cabinets as needed.

As device density increases, cooling is a top concern. DevShield and DefenseShield both ensure adequate airflow with ten powerful, long-life fans providing 235 CFM of airflow each to rapidly exhaust heat out of the enclosure. The cabinet can power the fans on redundant circuits with automatic failover in case of power or PDU failure.

The Enconnex DefenseShield EMC Hardened Enclosure

Enconnex has built its reputation on developing innovative solutions to meet today’s data center demands. When a customer needed emanation-controlled security across multiple mixed-use locations, rack-level shielding was a better solution than building out dozens of SCIFs. The DefenseShield RF-shielded cabinet was born.

We invite you to contact us to discuss your specific needs and the features and capabilities of the DefenseShield solution. We feel confident that DefenseShield will meet your security and testing requirements cost-efficiently.
