What are Colocation Cabinets? | Enconnex

One of the main benefits of colocation data centers is flexibility. That flexibility extends down to the server cabinet level. Most colocation providers give customers the option of renting a fraction of a cabinet. It’s the ideal solution for customers who have a modest amount of equipment, allowing them to reap the benefits of colocation while optimizing costs. That doesn’t mean those customers are willing to sacrifice physical security. They want assurance that their equipment is protected against unauthorized access.

Enter the colocation cabinet. Also referred to as two-bay, multi-bay, or simply colo cabinets, colocation cabinets are modular units that are subdivided into secure compartments. They allow providers to offer fractional space while physically separating each customer’s equipment.

How Colocation Cabinets Benefit Providers

Colocation cabinets provide the flexibility customers demand while enabling providers to best utilize space in their multitenant data centers. Empty space isn’t “stranded” if a customer needs only part of the cabinet. Colocation providers minimize the amount of unused space in their facilities, improving revenue and better enabling them to meet growing demand.

What to Look for in a Colocation Cabinet

Because colocation cabinets support multiple customers, they should deliver the highest levels of quality, reliability, and flexibility. Here are the key features to look for.

Physical Security

Each compartment, or bay, within the cabinet, should have locks to prevent unauthorized access to the equipment. The cabinet should also have a robust steel frame for maximum protection. Power and network cable access should be secured.

Airflow Management

Colocation cabinets should have perforated doors to allow for proper airflow. This enables providers to reduce the thermal load and minimize the risk of equipment overheating while keeping cooling costs in check.

Physical Access

Front and rear access doors and removable, locking side panels make it easier to load and access equipment without compromising security.

Load Rating

The colocation cabinet should be able to handle today’s heavier equipment. Of particular importance is the dynamic load rating, which is the amount of weight the cabinet can handle when rolling on casters.

Cable Management

Built-in cable management features for each compartment allow for neat installation, simplified troubleshooting, and maximum airflow. Channels for mounting power distribution units (PDUs) further streamline management and maximize available cabinet space.

Flexible Features

Customers sharing space in a colocation cabinet may have widely different types of equipment. Each compartment should offer the flexibility to adjust mounting rails and other components as needed to meet various requirements.

Introducing the InfiniRack Multi-Bay Cabinet

Inspired by our award-winning InfiniRack Data Center Cabinet, the Enconnex InfiniRack Multi-Bay Cabinet brings innovation to the colocation/multitenant data center industry. It is separated into two 20U+ compartments to be used by two separate customers. Each compartment is secured by a dedicated swing-handle latch with a configurable, four-digit combination. Key override enables authorized personnel to access the system in an emergency.

Each bay also features secure, dedicated data and power cable access with brush-sealed cable openings. The integrated cable lashing panel and half-height PDU mounting bracket are secure and isolated from the other compartment. The equipment mounting rails are easily adjusted, allowing for quick repositioning from front to back. The frame interior includes depth markings for reference.

All four doors (top/bottom, front/rear) are made from a single sheet of metal with 80 percent hexagonal perforations. Removable, locking side panels simplify equipment access without compromising security. The cabinet is equipped with four heavy-duty casters and leveling feet, with a 2500-pound (1136 kg) load rating.
